Block
This field is used to group items together.  Items within the same block will be administered together during data collection.

graphic
Items are often blocked together when they have the same response option or they are all positively worded or negative items.  Administering items together in this manner can reduce participant burden and/or confusion.

The default block value is 1. Therefore, all items are initially grouped together in one block.  Block values can be numbers only, no letters. To modify, enter new values into the block field and click Save. The page will refresh with the new item blocks grouped together.

ID

Item

Branching, If
This field is used to define the criteria by which branching should begin. The Branching, If boxes contain item responses.

During administration, if a user selects the response indicated in this field, the next item they are administered will be defined by the Then Go To field.  If the user selects any other response they will be administered the subsequent item as shown on the Instrument Customization page.

Branching, If and Then Go To fields can only be used when the Administration Method is set to Branch.

Then Go To
This field is used in correlation with the Branching, If field.  This field indicates what the next item should be if a participant provides the response identified in Branching, If.

The Then Go To drop lists contains all subsequent item IDs within the current instrument.

graphic
There are two additional options within the Template drop lists.

·      Horizontal 01
·      Horizontal 01 Auto Advance

These templates will display the response options on a horizontal line. The response score and text, where applicable, will be nested under each response button.  It is recommended that this template be used when asking an item which contains a larger number of response with anchoring text at either end of the responses, e.g. On a scale from 0-10, please rate your pain.  In this type of item, you may want a response score displayed with each response option. To do this, check the Show Response Score checkbox for each response option on the Item Detail page.

The Horizontal templates are only available for multiple choice response types. If an item is assigned any other response type, these template options will not appear in the Template drop list for that item.
