What is a computerized adaptive test (CAT)?

Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) is a form of computer-based testing that adapts to the examinee's trait level. For this reason, it has also been called tailored testing.  Questions are selected based on a respondent’s previous answers.  For example, if an examinee indicates having difficulty climbing a flight a stairs, the next selected question will be appropriate for someone at that level of functioning.  The next question may be about climbing up a single step or curb. If someone can climb a flight of stairs with ease, the next question may be about climbing several flights of stairs.
